A simple planetary gear mechanism is usually called a three-member mechanism, and the three members are the sun gear, the planet carrier, and the ring gear. Suppose these three components need to determine the relationship between each other. In that case, generally, one of the components needs to be fixed first, then decide who the active part is and determine the active region’s speed and rotation direction.
The planetary gear has the following characteristics in structure:
- The sun gear, planet carrier, and ring gear are all concentric. That is, they rotate about a common axis. This can eliminate countershafts and intermediate bags used in manual transmissions.
- All gears always mesh with each other. No gear sliding is required when shifting gears, so friction and wear are short and long life.
