What is the difference between a taper lock and a QD bushing?
If you’ve ever had to disassemble a driveshaft and find out what’s inside, you probably know the difference between a taper lock and a QD bushing. Applications: mount the assembly to the drive shaft. The main difference between the two is the flange. QD bushings are flanged apart, while tapered locking bushings are not. Both types of bushings are working with pulleys and timing pulleys.
Split tapered bushings have a hole at the end of the bushing. The split part has a thread, while the inner part is recessed. The split taper facilitates the insertion and removal of components and is available in a reverse mount configuration. Generally, QD bushings are more durable than tapered locks, but they have different advantages.
Tapered locking bushings are pre-drilled and keyed on the shaft and keyway. The inner diameter of the tapered locking bushing is compressed by a blind socket head cap screw. Bushings of this type are available for various shaft bore diameters. Be sure to check the axle hole and hub type before installation. Correct installers can prevent damage.
Split tapered bushings are flanged bushings that can be used in a variety of applications. These types are commonly used for pulleys and pulleys. These bushings eliminate the need to drill holes in components and can be easily changed in size. The split tapered bushing is keyed in two positions. Unlike taper locking bushings, breakaway taper bushings do not slip when tightened loose. However, they take up more space on the axis.
In terms of bore diameter, tapered bushings are the most popular choice. The latter is the more expensive option, but the former is easier to install and remove. In addition, the tapered bushing facilitates the removal and clamping of the shaft.
