Welded steel chain is a type of chain used in industrial and manufacturing applications. It is made by welding links together using high-precision electric or gas welding processes. The chain is typically made of steel, which is strong and durable and can be used for a variety of heavy-duty applications such as conveying and lifting. Welded steel chain is available in a range of grades, sizes, and configurations, and it is often used in combination with other chain types such as roller chains or attachment chains.

High Strength Welded Steel Chain Types
Welded steel chains come in a variety of types, including straight-sidebar welded steel chains, offset-sidebar welded steel chains, narrow welded steel chains, welded steel drag chains, stainless steel welded steel chains, welded steel mill chain, and heavy-duty welded steel chains. Straight side-bar chains are typically used for light-duty applications, such as conveyor systems, while welded steel mill chains are used for heavier-duty applications, such as lumber mills and material handling. Welded steel drag chains are used for conveying capacities and shock absorption, and offset-sidebar welded steel chains are used for sewage and water treatment plants. Additionally, there are several types of steel chains covered by the ANSI standard.
Offset-Sidebar Welded Steel Chain
The most common style of welded steel chain is the offset sidebar style, this ranges in size WH78 – WH200. Offset sidebar welded steel chains have been a long-time primary for many grain handling, lumber, elevating, and conveying applications. This is due to the high-strength and durable design that allows the chain to have the versatility and capability to be used in almost any heavy-duty application. When picking welded steel chain it is important to notate the part number designations. This is because different letters in the part numbers will designate the different styles or manufactured techniques used on the chain.

Welded Steel Drag Chain
Welded steel drag chains are designed in a way that allows for a larger “carry” surface for more material distribution. Because of the design welded steel drag chain is found in lumber mills, aggregate facilities, pulp, paper, mining, asphalt, and many other applications. We stock both an import line of welded steel drag chains as well as a manufactured in the USA series. All of our drag chains are manufactured to American standards and conform to industry-standard dimensions so they interchange with other brands and manufactures. Below is a drag chain size chart as well as part number nomenclature.

Stainless Steel Welded Steel Chain
Stainless steel welded steel chains are utilized in heavy-duty abrasive applications that require a stainless steel chain. These chains are typically manufactured from 304-SS, 316-SS, or 4103-SS materials and are also available with attachments and sprockets. The chart below shows the standard sizes for stainless steel welded steel chains but additional sizes are available upon request.

WHX Welded Steel Chains
WHX series chains are dimensionally the same as WH series chain with the exception that WHX series chains use “case hardened” pins instead of the standard through-hardened. These chains are typically found in grain applications as well as forestry and heavy-duty conveying applications that have high shock loads. Read the comparison below between case hardened and through-hardened for additional information.

Welded Steel Chain Sprockets
Welded steel chain sprockets are components used in many conveying, driving, and elevating applications. They are designed to work with welded steel mill chains and provide a means of transferring power from one part of a system to another. These sprockets are usually made from high-strength steel and feature hardened teeth to ensure they remain resistant to wear and tear. They are available in a variety of sizes and configurations to suit different applications. Depending on the application, they may also feature lube grooves and teeth with a special coating to reduce friction.
Additionally, we offer a full line of high-quality welded steel chain sprockets that range in tooth size, bore size, and hub configuration, and are manufactured specifically for the welded chain. We can even supply Made To Order welded steel chains and custom welded chain sprockets to meet your exact application needs.
