1008 Taper Lock Bushings
1008 bushings belong to the “taper lock” bushing category and are found in roller chain sprockets and pulleys. Available in bores ranging from 1/2″ to 1-1/8″ (imperial) and 14mm to 25mm (metric), these bushings are the second-largest bushing type. Tapered lock bushings are used in applications where narrow lengths of through-holes are required or shaft mounting must be close to the bearing. The universal design keeps center loads small, preventing problems with high cantilever loads. The 1108 bushings are separated by a flange, while the tapered bushing provides accurate clamping on the shaft, equivalent to a “shrink fit.”
1108 Tapered Locking Bushings are used in a very wide variety of applications for a number of different reasons. We offer our customers high-quality inch and metric size tapered locking bushings at the best prices in the industry without sacrificing quality. These bushings will be directly interchangeable with other manufactured bushings, so you don’t have to worry about compatibility. Additionally, we can supply bushings in stainless steel and special bores upon request! Installation
1. Clean all oil, dirt, and paint from the shaft, bushing holes, bushing exterior, and bores of components (sprockets, pulleys, etc.).
2. Insert the bushing into the assembly. Match hole patterns, not threaded holes (each hole on one side only).
3. Thread the set screw or cap screw into the half-threaded hole shown below. Install the assembly on the shaft.
4. Alternately set the torque setting or cap screw* to the recommended torque setting in the table below.
5. Fill all unoccupied holes with grease.
Removal
1. Remove any retaining or cap screws.
2. Insert the set screw or cap screw into the above hole.
3. To reinstall, complete all five (5) installation instructions.
Benefits of Taper Lock Bushing
A tapered lock bushing is a bearing with an 8-degree taper to reduce through-hole length. It uses internal screws to secure the bearing to the shaft and provides a slim fit. This type of bushing is available for a variety of axle hole diameters and requires the correct hub for the proper assembly of components. Proper installation is critical for long-term performance and preventing damage to bearings or shafts.
The benefits of tapered locking bushings are well documented and this article will outline the benefits of these locking assemblies. The tapered interface converts the radial force N into the load of the screw clamp. The tapered design of the locking assembly helps overcome the angle of friction, the angle at which friction overcomes gravity. Its coefficient of friction is 0.12, which is significantly lower than standard QD bushings. In addition, it is simple to measure the contact pressure between the shaft and the hub.
