Adjustable Speed V Belt Pulley Application
The most common reason is for mechanical drive speed variation. A great deal of drive speed refinement is possible with the use of adjustable speed v belt pulleys and they are used on fans and blowers and industrial water and trash pump applications. Adjustable speed v belt pulleys allow for mechanical drive speed variation that is economical, easy to install, and easy to adjust. In just seconds a technician can increase or decrease drive speed.
The principle of a adjustable speed v belt pulley is that the threaded angular faced discs forming the V-shaped groove, in which the belt rides, are movable. When the discs are moved toward each other, the belt rides higher in the groove and the pitch diameter of the sheave is larger, which increases the driven speed. When the discs are moved away from each other, the belt rides lower and the pitch diameter is smaller decreasing the driven speed. In contrast, with a “fixed pitch” drive design you are limited to a specific drive speed, which is a direct result of the “fixed diameter” of the sheaves.
Drive speed variation can be extremely valuable as a system is commissioned. Adjustable speed v belt pulleys are a simple method to vary fan speed to meet the required air flow specifications, allowing the system to be compliant with all engineering and regulatory requirements.
- Using a “fixed pitch” design would require a sheave combination change out to alter the driven fan speed, which is both time consuming and more costly.
- Using a variable pitch drive design can also help reduce zone air flow without relying on inefficient dampers, which restrict the air flow.
- Using adjustable speed v belt pulleys allow the motor and fan to operate at optimum speed characteristics.
Installation and Removal of V Belt Pulleys
Install
1. Check the pulley groove to make sure there are no scratches or sharp edges and all dimensions are up to standard;
2. Clean the surfaces of all parts, such as hub holes, taper sleeves, bolt holes, etc. Fit the cone sleeve into the pulley, aligning all the screw holes.
3. Apply oil to the screw (TB 1008-TB 3030) and thread (TB 3525-TB 5050) and screw them into the mounting holes, but do not tighten them yet.
4. Clean the surface of the drive shaft, push the pulley with the tapered sleeve installed to the predetermined position on the shaft, and check whether the V-belt pulley is aligned.
5. When using the keyway, it must be inserted into the hub first, and there must be a certain tolerance between the keyway and the hole hub.
6. Using a hexagonal wrench conforming to the DIN911 standard, alternately, gradually, and evenly tighten the bolts in each mounting hole until the torque shown in the table below is reached.
7. After a short period of operation (0.5 to 1 hour), check the tightening torque of the bolts and retighten them if necessary.
8. To prevent the intrusion of foreign matter, fill the hole’s connection hole with grease.
Disassemble
1. Loosen all the bolts, take out one or two of the bolts according to the number of disassembly holes, lubricate the bolt pattern and the tip of the bolt with oil, and insert the bolt into the disassembly hole.
2. Tighten the bolts alternately until the taper sleeve and pulley are loosened.
3. Remove the taper sleeve and pulley from the shaft.
