Plastic rack application
The rack design must be carefully considered in the plastic rack and pinion applications to ensure the highest load-carrying capacity and reduce frictional heat.
For circular racks, the teeth of the gear are cut on the rod so that the gear rolls on it when stationary. These racks are generally weaker than rectangular racks and therefore require careful design. They should be installed with sleeve bearings or other supports as they are unsuitable for continuous rotation.
The shrinkage of plastic gears depends on the molding process, material, ambient temperature, and time. This ratio is usually expressed as a percentage. For example, a plastic gear with shrinkage of 0.022 mm/mm has a pitch diameter of 50 mm in the mold but shrinks to 1.1 mm after molding and cooling.
The benefits of plastic racks are many. They can be heat treated for extra strength, self-lubricating, and lightweight. They are durable, but only if installed in the right environment.
