How to Lubrication Planetary Gearbox?
There are various methods for lubricating gearboxes, among which the most common are lubricating grease, splash oil, and forced oil.
- Lubricating grease lubrication
This type of lubricant is suitable for low speed operation, but it provides less cooling than oil and is not recommended for continuous operation or heavy load applications even at low speeds. The use of the correct amount of lubricant is crucial for any lubricant, especially grease. Insufficient lubrication can hinder the formation of an appropriate lubrication layer, while excessive lubrication, especially grease, can lead to viscous resistance and power loss.
- Oil splash lubrication
This is typically used for helical, spur, and bevel gearboxes, although it may also be used for planetary gearboxes. This program is also known as an oil bath because it uses an oil filled (or partially filled) reservoir. When gears rotate, they immerse themselves in an oil bath, causing oil to overflow onto other gears and bearings. However, if the gear teeth are completely submerged in water, a situation called “agitation” will occur.
Eddy currents occur when gears or bearings must work harder to “push” the lubricant. Walking along the beach is a good comparison. Passing water deep through the ankle is quite simple, while passing water deep through the knee is much more difficult.
The effectiveness of oil splash lubrication largely depends on the gear speed. According to the general view, a tangential velocity of at least 3 m/s is necessary for the effectiveness of splash lubrication.
- Forced oil lubrication
This method is suitable for high-speed applications, including oil mist, oil mist, and oil droplets. Oil atomizes during the oil mist process, saturating all areas of gears and other internal components. On the other hand, oil injection technology directly sprays lubricating oil onto gears and other components, but it is not always successful because large centrifugal forces can change the direction of oil injection.
Oil drop technology directly “drops” oil to the area that needs to be treated. The pump transports lubricant from the reservoir to the gears and/or bearings through an internal pipeline system. When some components are difficult to reach by oil splashing, this method is often combined with the splashing (called oil bath) method.
