Designing Plastic Gears and Cogs
While designing plastic gears is similar to designing gears and cogs with metal, it is critical to understand the material properties of plastics before designing and testing them. This includes strength, elasticity, thermal expansion, moisture absorption, and friction properties. Although plastics are less intense than metals, they can still be used in gear and gear designs if designed properly. However, their lower strength may require larger gears to carry the same load. To overcome this problem, designers may need to employ innovative design strategies.
The meshing conditions of the gears are critical to efficient performance. The mesh ratio is the ratio of the contact distance between the teeth and the center of the gear. The gears should run with the smallest possible center distance to obtain a proper contact ratio. If the contact ratio is low, adjust the pitch and gear ratio, or consider changing the tolerances of the gears.
Plastic gears are also less expensive than metal gears because they are mass-molded and ready to use. In general, plastic gears are fifteen to twenty percent lighter than steel. However, they must be more significant than metal gears to transmit the same power. Plastic gears are quieter and less noisy than metal gears. This is because the plastic gear teeth deform, compensating for misalignment or errors that cause gear noise.
