Plastic Worm Gear Efficiency Prediction
Plastic worm gears’ efficiency depends on the friction coefficient between the gear and the worm gear. The friction coefficient is obtained through mathematical calculations and experiments. In this study, a tribometer measured the coefficient of friction of nylon six on steel at different normal pressures. The gear geometry is working to determine the contact point’s location and the contact area’s curvature. The efficiency prediction method was then tested using a plastic worm gear in an EPS system. The results show that the predicted efficiency is similar to the measured efficiency.

Fiberglass-reinforced products are often exposed to different types of humidity, so mechanical properties must be carefully considered for proper performance. Side gates can create weld marks on the gear tooth profile, which can affect its mechanical properties. In these cases, top gates are preferring. They ensure fiber orientation properties and prevent weld marks.
Plastic worm gears outperform their counterparts in weight, noise, and corrosion resistance. While general plastics may not ensure the mechanical properties required for vehicle gears, fiberglass-reinforced plastic worm gears can provide the same durability and stiffness as metal gears.
